- Androscoggin Land Trust
- The Androscoggin Land Trust is a private, non-profit
501(c)(3) membership-supported organization dedicated to protecting,
through land conservation and stewardship, the important natural areas,
traditional landscapes, and outdoor experience along the central
Androscoggin River corridor. We currently conserve over 3,100 acres of
land, including over eight miles of riverfront along the Androscoggin
River.
- Atlantic Salmon Riversheds Map (Maine Department
of Environmental Protection)
- The Champlain Project In 1880 Charles Eliot, son of Harvard president Charles W. Eliot,
organized the Champlain Society, a group of Harvard undergraduates, to
explore Mount Desert Island (MDI) and study various topics of natural
history: botany, ornithology, geology, etc. One result of their
investigations was the 1894 publication "Flora of Mount Desert Island,
Maine".
- Checklist
of Maine Birds. Maine Audubon Society's checklist of 331
birds.
- East
Penobscot Bay Nature Education Resource Directory Names of groups and
individuals "who can teach students and curious residents about the
natural world in the East Penobscot Bay area."
- Friends
of Sunkhaze Meadows Web site
of a nonprofit association founded to support the mission of Sunkhaze
Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, a wildlife sanctuary with mixed
habitat of forest bordering wetlands and a peat bog. It includes
information in some detail on the birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians,
fish and insects found there.
- Humboldt Field Research Institute Field training programs, publishing and
research in all disciplines of natural history. Formerly Eagle Hill
Field Research Station.
- Jeepers Peepers. Under the
aegis of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Land
& Water Quality, upper elementary students and teachers around
the state track the return or appearance in Maine of robins, spring
peepers, sugar maples, and dandelions, as signs of spring. The
observations are mapped
and archived. Also tracked are climate and weather data such as
snow depth, temperature, and lake ice-out dates.
- Lichen Research Program at the University of
Maine at Fort Kent Covers
approximately 60,000 specimens, including the lichens of Maine:
North of Mount Katahdin, including all of Aroostook County; the
northernmost section of Penobscot County; and the 5000-acre Big Reed
old-growth forest preserve in northern Piscataquis County; as well as
numerous specimens from other areas in New England and in the province
of New Brunswick, Canada.
